It was a real thrill to tonight co-host a special hour-long programme on neurodiversity in elite sport on BBC Radio 5 Live.

Working alongside 5 Live Sport presenter Katie Smith and a neurodiverse team from Salford, I helped steer the BBC's first national long-form conversation on neurodiversity in top-level sport.

5 Live Sport is BBC Radio 5 Live’s flagship programme for live sports coverage and in-depth discussion, providing live commentary, expert analysis, and interviews across a wide range of sports. The show is known for its comprehensive coverage, attracting a large and loyal audience across the UK.

Insight came from across the sporting landscape with contributions from founder of Neurodiverse Sport and former Olympic rower Caragh McMurtry, England footballer Lucy Bronze and tennis player Jenson Brooskby. We were also joined in the studio by Wales international Safia Middleton-Patel (pictured).

It was a real pleasure to help produce, consult and co-host this unique programme, and I cannot thank 5 Live enough for involving me. It was incredibly heartening to see one listener text in to say the show resonated “so much”, while another described it as “fascinating”.

A lot of outlets rush this kind of journalism, but it speaks volumes that 5 Live gave the topic the time, care and understanding it deserved. Consultancy and care are critical to accurate neurodivergent representation and I am keen to see the rest of the media follow suit.
